Golden Hillside at Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art

It was a beautiful day to paint along the art trail at Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, one of my favorite places.

Plein air painting at the Illinois River Watershed Learning Center

Can you tell I was appreciating the warm afternoon sun after a really cold morning of painting?

Deep Summer's Glow

                                               That glow of deep summer,
when the air is hot and still
and buzzes with the thrum of cicadas.

The water hardly moves, there is no breeze,
even the sun seems to have stopped
                                               advancing across the sky.

Mixed Greens, all organic

It was a beautiful spring day today.  The path up the hill was freshly mown. A gentle breeze was blowing. My faithful Labrador Retriever and I headed out to paint en plein air.  A perfect day.

She Knows Her Own Mind

...and she says, under her breath, "I am so not eating those carrots."
I do admire a slightly stubborn little girl. ;)

Variation 3, starting to break free

Third variation on same photo reference.
Rendering a perfect likeness is not my objective.
Moving from painting to art/ finding light and shadow/keeping the emotion involved....
that's more like it.
The emotion that inspired me in the photo is present.  I'm pleased.
More to come.

Down Valley at Dusk

The sun is dropping behind the trees. Color is becoming indiscernible. Soon the deer whose tracks are seen in the snow will return to find food at the edge of the field and bed down in the grasses under  the tree line, where they spend each night. Calm descends on a snowy evening.
